Kvernufoss - Lush and Green

Kvernufoss

Kvernufoss is a gorgeous waterfall in the south of Iceland near Skogar along road 1.

From road 1, in the south of Iceland, take the exit to Skogar, leading to the Skógar Museum. Go straight ahead to hotel Edda and the museum. Park the car at the Skógar Museum.

From the museum walk east, along the hangar, towards the river. You have to climb over a fence. At teh river go left and walk upstream to Kvernufoss. It is only a 5-10 minute walk (600-800 m) and few people go over here. When I was in Iceland I didn't knew Kvernufoss existed. I was only 500 meter from the waterfall when we visited the museum…..

The river Kverna runs form the Skógaheiði area and drops down in a single drop over 40 meters. What makes this waterfall very special is that it is possible to walk behind the waterfall. Here you have an awesome view on the river and gorge which is covered with green moss. Talking pictures from behind Kvernufoss is a guarantee for great pictures. A must when you return form Iceland.

The river Kverna has its origins in the Eyjafjallajökull glacier and flows over the edge of a cliff that was once the former coastline of Iceland and falls into a small gap down. After the last ice the coastline had retired by the upward rise of Iceland which formed the cliffs that are the boundary between the lowlands and the highlands.
